The Super Bowl first started as a championship game between two rival football leagues, the NFL and the AFL.  In fact, the "Super Bowl" didn't even get its name until the Jets upset the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III.  Early in the history of the Super Bowl, teams from the AFL (later the AFC after the merger) dominated the title game. 

The 1972 Miami Dolphins hold the distinction of being the only team in history to run the table and go undefeated.  The Dolphins won 2 Super Bowls in the 1970s.  There were two other dynasties that owned the 70s; the Dallas Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Both teams were strong that decade, but it was the Steelers who reigned supreme winning 4 championships.

The NFC took back control of the title game in the 80's and 90's when the San Francisco 49ers won 4 titles, the Dallas Cowboys won 3, while the Washington Redskins and New York Giants each won a pair.  Some of those wins were over the Buffalo Bills, who made an incredible four straight Super Bowls, losing all four however.

Around the turn of the century, the New England Patriots were the top team, winning 3 titles in 4 years.  Since then, parity has taken over the title game, with very few repeat appearances and multiple champions.  In 2012, the NY Giants and New England Patriots bucked that trend as they had a rematch of Super Bowl XLII.  The result was more of the same as an amazing Giants catch helped Eli Manning lead his team down the field for an exciting comeback win!
